The Results Are Out

Star Q

The recent UPSR examination results are out and the outcome was not what many had expected.  To say that the results came as a total surprise and many that were dismayed is really underestimating things.

Apparently not many year 6 students got straight As for the examination and quite a number of young candidates cried their hearts out when they found out they did not do as well as they had expected, even though they had put in a lot of effort and hours in studying and revision.  And on the parents' part it also meant that money for tuition had not been well spent.

But we hear people in the highest echelon of the Education Ministry saying that this years results should not be compared with the results from the previous UPSR exam, because of several reasons which I am not going to delve into here.

What I would like to say is, no matter how insignificant these people in their secluded air-conditioned offices may suggested these examinations are, parents and students have their own expectations.  The real culprit is labelling this year 6 assessment as an examination.  The laymen amongst us always (I repeat, always!) relate examinations to results and expectations.  There's no denying it.

At one end of the spectrum there are these policy makers who keep changing the system or throw half-baked policies that take years to mature, leaving students and parents to become the proverbial guinea pigs.  At the other end, there is the public who really crave for an education system that is simply put, fair.
